Location
The resorts are basically neighbours. Hidden Valley is 1 extra minute down the road from Deerhurst, about 10 minutes drive out of Huntsville on Highway 60.
Deerhurst Resort
Deerhurst Resort sits on the shores of Peninsula Lake with a long driveway through its Deerhurst Highlands Golf Course. It’s a sprawling property with several buildings, so while you’ll enjoy the scenic surroundings, you may need to walk 3-10 minutes (or rely on the shuttle) to reach amenities like the pool or restaurants from your room.

Hidden Valley Resort
Hidden Valley is also situated on Peninsula Lake, just east of Huntsville. This resort is smaller and feels more secluded, nestled in nature. Being directly adjacent to the Hidden Valley Ski Hill, it is the most convenient spot for a skiing vacation in the winter.

Price: Deerhurst vs Hidden Vally
Both resorts are priced in the mid-to-upper range, but the value differs:
Deerhurst Resort
While its iconic status and included activities may justify the cost for families, the outdated furnishings and inconsistent housekeeping and front desk service leave some guests feeling shortchanged.
Hidden Valley Resort
The rustic charm and slightly lower price point make it appealing for couples or travellers seeking a quieter atmosphere. However, issues with upkeep may detract from the overall value as well.

Key Points to Consider when Comparing Deerhurst vs Hidden Valley Resort
- Variety: Deerhurst offers significantly more variety of activities. However, many of these activities are provided by partner companies and come at an additional cost and could be booked separately.
- Family-Friendliness: Deerhurst’s indoor treehouse, arcade, and kids’ activities make it more appealing for families with young children.
- Skiing & Golfing: Both resorts are well-suited for ski and golf enthusiasts, with Hidden Valley next to the ski hills, and Deerhurst next to the golf courses.
- Relaxation: Hidden Valley’s private beach and smaller scale create a more tranquil atmosphere.

With its extensive list of activities, Deerhurst Resort is ideal for those seeking variety and adventure, though costs can add up. If you’re after a simpler, more serene getaway, Hidden Valley Resort might be your best bet.
Food & Restaurants
Both resorts are about 10 minutes away from the town of Huntsville, where there are many great food options. But, if you’re looking to stay in for food, you must consider your options as both resorts, as they differ drastically.

Deerhurst Resort
Deerhurst has several dining options with glowing reviews. However, these restaurants are not exclusive to guests, so I recommend making reservations. It’s worth noting that the resort is a cashless property, so plan accordingly.
Here’s an overview of their restaurants:
- Eclipse Restaurant & Terrace – Open daily from 8 am to 11 am for breakfast, with buffet options on weekends. Dinner reservations are recommended.
- Maple Pub & Patio – Serving lunch and dinner, this casual eatery is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 am to 4 pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11:30 am to 9 pm. It offers a relaxed atmosphere with scenic views.
- Compass Grill & Lounge – Ideal for casual bites, dinner, and bar service, it’s open daily from 4 pm to 11 pm. Live music is featured on Saturdays from 7 pm to 9 pm, with bar service until midnight.
- The Antler Steakhouse – For upscale dining in a rustic log house setting, this steakhouse operates Thursday to Saturday from 5:30 pm to 8 pm. Dinner reservations are required.
- Row & Roast Coffee Co. – Offering local coffee and snacks, it’s open Saturday from 7 am to 3 pm and Sunday from 7 am to 12 pm.

Hidden Valley Resort
Hidden Valley Resort’s in-house restaurant, The Birches, focuses on fresh, locally sourced ingredients to deliver an authentic Muskoka dining experience.
The menu features classic favourites with a modern twist, ensuring something for everyone. For those seeking a drink, the resort also has a bar lounge that offers a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day of activities.
It is open for breakfast from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and dinner from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, but some reviews have mentioned that the kitchen doesn’t always stick to these times.
